Sushma Maharaj has extensive experience of advising a full range of clients in the clean energy and low carbon space including, project sponsors, corporations, financial institutions, governments and regulatory bodies – both within the UK and abroad. She advises on foreign and domestic regulatory and licensing regimes and the full range of project documents including concession agreements and arrangements, connection agreements, supply agreements, services agreements, operation and maintenance agreements and power purchase agreements/ structures. Her experience includes a nine month secondment to the electricity regulator in Northern Ireland (OFREG), a three month secondment to British Energy, Gloucester, United Kingdom and a seven month secondment to Smartest Energy, London.

Sushma’s recent transactional experience includes:

  • Advised the Directors of Social Energy Limited on the establishment of a battery aggregation business (via its AI powered platform) and also the establishment of an electricity supply business in the UK – including advising on sale of goods agreements, various services agreements/arrangements, energy trading agreements, metering agreements and electricity supply terms and conditions.

  • Advised the Regulatory Authority of Bermuda on its powers and duties under electricity legislation in Bermuda, the development of electricity licences (generation, transmission, distribution and supply), the development of a renewable power purchase agreement, and on various regulatory issues.

  • Advised Smartest Energy’s commercial and legal teams on a range of issues including trading contracts, services contracts, electricity supply contracts between Smartest and its customers, power purchase agreements between Smartest and renewable generators from which it purchases power and also on a range of electricity regulatory and licence issues.

  • Advised Gravis Capital Partners in relation to the bankability of a power purchase agreement in relation to the biomass power plant which was constructed, developed, financed and operated by Birmingham Bio Power Limited at Tysley in Birmingham.
